ABOUT GELAPPLIKATORN
More time for nurses and reduced pain for patients are just two of several things that improve with Gelapplikatorn.
The district nurse Gerd Nilsson from Landskrona, Sweden often wondered why the catheter exchanges were so problematic and time consuming. Although it is changed in 100's of thousands every year the innovation has stood still. Much depends on the area of urology not being so ´hot´ among innovators.
The solution is a very simple innovation that creates a means for staff to while reduce patient pain also saves time, in addition in a very exposed and intrusive situation.
The project will produce an ´optimal´ Gelapplication as Gerd Nilsson calls her invention, Gelapplikatorn.
It is tested and validated to ensure that it fullfill these promises. The test has used the help of professionals with the design from the Faculty of Engineering, medical device development through IT / MT service at Skåne University Hospital (medical technology department). All testing has been done in blinded studies using the department of Urology at Skåne University Hospital. A market and competitive analysis and implementation and financing planing done by Hansen Marknadsanalys.
Patents and IPO has been done i collaboration with AWA patent and patents is granted in major markets around the world.
KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS
Gelapplikatorn™ provides the following benefits;
- You are guaranteed to lubricate all the way from the bladder to the opening of the urethra.
- Reduced risk of injury and bleeding from mucosal damage in the prostate area.
- Reduced pain experience as the catheter glides easily through the smooth, stunned and dilated urethra and reduces the risk of falling into blinds (anatomically there are sometimes pocket formations that can put an end to insertion).
- Less privacy violation because it quicker and easier to apply the lubricant not least in the prostate area.
- Less mess with lubricant flowing outside the urethra (as the lubricant dilates the opening of the urethra, it leaks out a part next to it, making the procedure messy). Secondary, this means that less lubricant is needed/used.
- Possibility to choose thinner catheter. (In case of difficulty inserting catheter, it is often chosen to try to insert a coarser catheter that is not as flexible).
- When catheterizing women easier to "find the right spot" (which in turn really gives a financial saving, a time gain and a reduced invasion of privacy)
FOR THE PATIENT
- Less privacy-infringing
- Less pain for the patient
- Increased possibility of thinner catheter thickness (= violence and irritation on the mucous membranes and better sense of the patient)
- Reduced risk of bleeding from the prostate gland
In total it gives the patient less worries and a much more comfortable treatment whilst changing the indwelling catheter.
FOR THE HCP STAFF
- Possibility to apply the right amount of anesthetic lubricant through the already in place catheter before abstraction.
- Faster handling of switching and re-depositing
- Less lubricant (anesthetic) is used when changing and reinstating
- Less smudge
- Less risk of entering the dud supine when changing
- Provides a smooth application of lubricant throughout the urethra from the bladder down when changing
- Provides the possibility to start application at the closing muscle and thus "force" the gel up past the prostate when re-insertion
- Make urethra visible to women
HCP staff loves the easy to use and time saving Gelapplikatorn™ as it makes the process much easier for both them and their patients. Saving time, pain, money and environment due to a fast painless procedure with less waste and less lubricant. Done in a fraction of the time!
FOR THE CAREGIVER
- Cheaper than today's method (time-saving and less anaesthetic gel is used)
- Faster treatment than today's method
- Less waste than with today's method (fewer failures result in fewer catheters)
- Works with all brands of catheters and lubricants (such as Foley, Bard, Astra Tech, Rusch ...)
- Less malpractice risks
- Possibility to switch more often to reduce infections in e.g. sensitive patients
- Reduced need for transport of cases to emergency care units for assistance.
Saving time is more and more crucial for all cargiving units whilst all want to provide the best care and practise for thier patients and staff. Gelapplikatorn™ provides a solution to a profound problem with a small task taking much time without any benefits. Increased satisfaction from both patients and staff at a lower cost and with a better result seems to be a no brainer...
